There is a reason aircraft windows are round.
In the 1950s, the De Havilland Comet was the world's first commercial jet airliner. Two of them broke apart in mid-air within a year of entering service. The cause turned out to be the square corners of the cabin windows. Each pressurisation cycle concentrated stress at those corners until a crack initiated and propagated through the fuselage. Every passenger jet built since uses rounded windows for exactly that reason.
The same principle applies to your nails.
A sharp corner is what mechanical engineers call a stress concentrator. Every snag, bump, knock, or peel-back force you apply to the tip gets multiplied at that corner. A microcrack initiates there and propagates inward along the natural laminar structure of the keratin. That is how lateral splits start at the corner of the free edge and travel proximally toward the cuticle, sometimes deep enough to take the nail with it.

Dramatic nail trauma (a slammed car door, a heavy dropped object) is rare. The everyday cause of fingernail damage is the accumulated micro-trauma of a sharp corner snagging on:
- Fabric: sweaters, towels, hair, bedsheets, jacket linings

- Pockets, bag interiors, zippers, velcro
- Hosiery and tights
- Other nails, during ordinary hand-on-hand contact
Each snag applies a small, sudden lateral or upward force at the corner of the nail. Because the corner is a stress concentrator, that small force becomes a disproportionately large local stress. A microcrack initiates at the free edge. Repeated snags propagate the crack until it shows up as visible splitting, peeling, or a partial tear.
Rounded corners do not snag. The curved geometry slides past fabric and hair instead of catching on it. Oval
Oval is a slightly elongated round. It keeps the geometric benefits (no sharp corners, smooth perimeter) but pushes the tip a few millimetres further out. The slight taper at the centre of the free edge is a mild stress concentrator if grown long, but at short to medium length, oval and round are essentially equivalent in breakage risk.
Squoval
Squoval is a straight free edge with the corners buffed smooth. This is the literal AAD shape: straight across, slightly rounded at the tips for maximum strength. Soft Square
Soft square is straight across with only lightly rounded corners. It is closer to a true square than a squoval. The corners are still semi-vulnerable because the bevel is small. Better than sharp square, not as protective as squoval.
Sharp Square
Sharp square has hard 90-degree corners with no bevel. These are the highest-stress geometry of any common shape and the highest snag risk. Almond, Stiletto, Coffin

Length Still Matters More Than Shape

If you are growing out gel damage, recovering from a partial onycholysis, or working with brittle nails that split easily, the shape decision becomes more consequential.
The rules:
- Sharp square is the worst possible choice during regrowth. The damaged free edge is already structurally compromised. Adding a stress concentrator at each corner accelerates the existing damage with every minor snag.
- Round or oval is the lowest-risk shape. No corners means no stress concentrators means no preferred location for the next microcrack to start.
