Toric contact lenses are specially designed to correct astigmatism. Unlike regular spherical lenses that have a uniform curvature—like a slice of a beach ball—toric lenses have a more complex shape, resembling a slice of a donut. This design allows them to correct vision differently along the horizontal and vertical axes of your eye.

Because of this shape, toric lenses have multiple focusing powers within a single lens, gradually increasing or decreasing in strength across different orientations. This makes them ideal for correcting the uneven curvature that characterizes astigmatism.

Regular (spherical) contact lenses maintain the same prescription power throughout and can rotate on the eye without affecting vision. Toric lenses, however, contain varying prescription powers across meridians and must remain in a fixed position on the eye to function correctly.
